TYPOLOGY 1979
Typology 1979 is the title of Joachim Brohm’s (*1955) monographic book published 2014 by Mack/London. The artist thus also chose to give a series of photographs he took in 1979 while studying at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen the same retrospective title.
Black and white photography was at the time commonly accepted as the standard amongst European artists and the first relevant articles about colour documentary in the US were being published for a specialized audience to read. This is when Brohm dedicated himself to the truthful representation of ordinary subject matter in muted colours. Typology 1979 is his earliest group of such works.
The comprehensive re-exploring and first publication of his early work from 1979 at this particular moment in time is an integral part of the photographer’s ongoing artistic concern and development. As far as he is concerned, the latter has always involved working on own photographic records.
