Wolf Hamm. Sign of the Times

Wolf Hamm's constant companion is his sketchbook. He is nearly always drawing: what he has seen, thought, overheard, made associations to... everything finds a place on the 14 x 9 centimeter sheets of his favorite little book. Hamm is a chronicler and at the same time a constant »art thinker«, his sketchbooks are bursting with ideas, designs, concepts, and concrete formulations. They form the source from which he composes the sometimes overflowing worlds of images and ideas in his paintings. Hamm comments on current affairs, the state of the world, and the human condition in general with great complexity on a visual and intellectual level. In addition to Hamm's great mastery of drawing, his pages show an impressive directness and have an immediate effect through their tenderness, fragility, and subtlety. This facsimile book – in the size of one of Hamm's actual sketchbooks – gathers a selection of sketches and notes from recent years and once more shows the artist as informed, erudite, humorous, and an attentive contemporary.
