In the process of his »Detected Dictionary« series of works begun in 2014, Stefan à Wengen has been questioning his own spectrum of images and motifs.
Since the mid-1990s, the artist has already been working on larger groups of works on issues concerning cultural codes and cultural memory. In this series he consciously keeps the pictures in black and white with different gray shades, accentuating his technically sophisticated and detailed style of painting. Singularly depicted on a canvas measuring 30 x 25 cm and mounted on wood, they are instantly recognizable to the viewer and evoke different associations. Unlike a lexicon, his works have no one absolutely correct outcome to point out. The artist combines symbolic visual elements with a new, individual reality. À Wengen's imagery expresses themes of life and raises awareness of each individual's personal life experiences.
